It’s finally Fall, and Fall clothing and fashion is SO FUN. Clothes greatly impact our relationship with our bodies. One way that I love my body is by reframing how I talk about clothes. Rather than using clothing as a measurement of if my body is ‘too big’ or ‘too small’ or wrong in any way, ... I just say that the clothes don’t have enough fabric, are confusing, or not right for me.
Because ultimately, my body isn’t wrong, and I deserve to wear, live in, and move in clothes that feel good and look good! In Tim Gunn’s book Quality Taste & Style he addresses the issue of items that don’t fit by saying, “Perhaps you like to torture yourself by trying on some jeans from a few years ago to see if you can button them. Clothes do not exist to humiliate their owners. Please do not force garments into performing psychological tasks for which they were not designed. Moreover, please be kind to yourself.” I had a whole collection of torture-jeans. Letting those go was not only liberating, but was a way of communicating to my subconscious that my worth is not dependent on fitting into those jeans, and that I am worthy of feeling good and looking good today. How we clothe our beloved bodies can be fun and interesting when the approach is one of: “I am amazing, let’s find clothes that reflect that!" While I hunt for the perfect cardigan, my team and I wanted to give a good shout out to some companies that are very supportive of women of all shapes and sizes, and that really make an extra effort to be helpful when finding clothes that reflect how you feel on the inside and how awesome you are on the outside. Molly’s pick: Modcloth - super customer service friendly, with live chat options so you can learn how each item will fit your body. Their retro styles come in a wide range of sizes, and all their marketing is such a celebration of having a body and being alive! Maddie’s pick: Athleta - they’ve been into positive body image before it was cool. Their designs are made to fit real bodies. They are very pro-women, with awesome promotions of #powerofshe. When looking at their clothes they have extended sizes, and the fabrics they use are high quality and have good stretch, while still be thick enough to feel sturdy. Makayla’s pick: Sockdreams - a small Portland Oregon based shop that has an awesome website overflowing with socks, tights, leggings, mittens, and more. They personally try on and test out the products and give detailed descriptions of how different items fit different bodies. They have excellent customer service! I love love love wearing tights and socks and leg warmers in the fall and winter. It feels so fun and feminine and decadent to have all those layers. See my Fall Body Positive Fashion Pinterest board for some fun fall fashion ideas from these sweet companies and more. WHAT ARE YOUR PICKS for Body-Positive Fashions? I want YOUR input on companies that you appreciate in terms of body positive fashion. What brands or companies reflect the values of:
Some brands are hopping on the “body positivity train” just to fit in, or make a joke, or be relevant. Even though they may not be fully sincere, I’m glad that body positivity is getting enough traction to make it a smart marketing move for big companies that may only be ½ way behind it. The message is getting out there, people are talking, we’re stirring up the pot, the shadow of body image is coming into the light. Sometimes things get worse before they get better: because becoming aware of the problem can be acutely uncomfortable, if not completely horrifying.
